Murray Teller likes to park in metered spaces in NYC and read his newspaper. Usually never leaving his car, he just likes to park and read. No one really understands why he likes to do this, but does Murray have a delicious motive? His actions become a burr in the butt of the mayor which makes him an even more endearing character, and has him becoming a kind of folk hero.Calvin Trillin's stories make me smile not because they are funny(which they are at times) but because they are a joy to read. The ending of this one will keep you guessing. Not much meat to this story, other than a man who lives to park within the time allowed in metered parking to read the paper. Those searching for a parking space are aggravated by his habits when he doesn't even get out to do any business. The attention he gets moves the curious into asking if they might sit in his car to visit with him, pouring out their troubles and solving their own problems in the confession. Things get dicey when he attracts a waiting line of those all wanting the same favor. The Mayor, a writer, the police, and sever lawyers all want to get into the act. All make for a very humorous story. It all reminds me of a Jackie Gleason show and conversations with Frank.
