Ebook About When Ward and Jacky Budweg decided to get married, Jacky put together a prenuptial agreement on a bar napkin—and included a unique stipulation. For better or worse, Ward agreed to a 3-year bike trip around the world. As the two embarked on a journey spanning 1,106 days and 6 continents, they had unforgettable moments, such as almost being blown off a mountain, getting chased by baboons, getting kicked out of hotels by Chinese police, dancing to accordion music at a Lithuanian farmhouse, and playing cricket in Slovenia. In The World at 10 MPH, Ward and Jacky tell the fascinating stories behind their adventure—the kind you don’t get on a tour bus. They describe locations discovered by ditching the GPS, playing charades to bridge 32 different language barriers, and depending on locals who invited them into their homes and friendships. They share truths they discovered about themselves as they traversed 33,523 miles (and wore out 24 tires), from Ward’s values about hard work, honed by growing up on a farm, to Jacky’s willingness to accommodate, bred into her as the sixth of seven daughters. Through it all, they captivate, inspire, and provide invaluable information on how to take the planet by bike. With humble humor and hard-won wisdom, Ward and Jacky show how they did it, what they saw, and what they learned, proving that stepping outside of your comfort zone is not only possible—but sometimes the best decision you could ever make.Book The World at 10 MPH : A Masterful Prenup Leads to a 3-Year 33,523-Mile Bicycle Adventure Review :
This book dives deep into the differences and similarities between cultures all around the world. I would recommend this book to people who love adventure but also for those who just love learning about cultures without risking giardia. My favorite chapter was the chapter on how different countries could be just across the border.Although this book won’t be winning any literary awards, it stays true to the voice of the authors, something so uncommon in a time of ghost writers. If you’ve met the authors, you will hear phrases they say that you won’t hear on television or in other recently written books. It’s written exactly the way they talk. I like the organization of the book by subject rather chronologically. This book or certain chapters could be fantastic for high school or middle school students learning about other cultures and but I would recommend screening passages first. I like the message that you don’t have to be rich or particularly “special” to achieve your dreams or live a happy and fulfilling life. I think that’s a message kids don’t hear often enough today. As a mom, I loved when they talked about how kids are kids everywhere. I could just picture the two little boys playing with bags of water and pouring it over each other’s heads for 30 minutes. My kids do that with cups in the bathtub every night.I wouldn’t consider myself extremely well traveled, but one thing that absolutely stuck out to me when I went on a mission trip to India and was echoed in this book was the reason people in other countries think that all Americans are rich. In some ways, it’s the things money can’t buy, like clean air, but even more than that the conditions the poorest people live in here versus other countries and the vast numbers of those people. It makes you truly realize how fortunate you are simply because of where you were born. The book goes into so many different examples and situations around the world that illustrates this.Overall, it was an extremely interesting and thought provoking read. I read it in 5 days and I’ve already talked about it so much at work that my office manager just had to read it. For someone wanting to do something similar, although it is not an exact “how to” it would be invaluably helpful to read. I homeschool and I plan on using several chapters when my kids get older. Reading this book was like sitting around a campfire with friends and telling stories of adventures and encounters with people and simple things. I loved the way the chapters were laid out with each one being a different story to tell rather than an Itinerary of dates, and times, and places. I laughed in some of the scariest places in the book but they did such a wonderful job of relating their own fear in such a humorous way. I really enjoyed the story and find myself thinking about Ward and Jacky's encounters with the people of this world as I go about my daily tasks. I reread books when I want to go back and spend time with the people in the book, and this is one I will definitely read again.
